Watering plants during the summer can be an overwhelming task. Containers dry out quickly and leaving plants unattended during a vacation can be a disaster. On July 28, 2014 at 6:00pm NC Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center, will be offering a hands-on workshop on drip irrigation. Learn how to design and install your own drip irrigation system for container gardens, vegetable gardens or flower beds. All participants will receive a drip irrigation kit with all of the parts needed to install their own irrigation system at home. The fee for this workshop is $8.00. All participants must pre-register by July 21, 2014. Registration is non-refundable but someone may come in your place. Space will be limited to the first 20 paid participants. Do you want to know what you can do with fresh produce or herbs grown in your own back yard? Currituck County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will be holding a 3 day cooking class using produce that can be grown in your own back yard. July 28th, 29th and 30th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm participants are invited to join the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent at the Currituck Extension Office as she picks, prepares and serves produce straight from the garden to the table. The County Agents have worked together to provide a raised bed demonstration garden at the Extension Office. This hands-on workshop will encourage participants to try new cooking techniques, use fresh herbs, and prepare more locally grown produce. On the first night we will explore ways to use fresh produce as appetizers and before dinner refreshments. Night two will include entrees, plating and garnishing. Night three we will take on deserts and after dinner refreshments. The classes cost $20.00 for all three or $10.00 a night. Participants of all ages are invited to join, however youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is non-refundable but someone may come in your place. Space will be limited to the first 12 paid participants. Participants can choose between a 5k run/walk training program, 5k PR program (for those wishing to break their personal records) and a Walking program to use throughout the 12 weeks. As you can see from the schedule, we have a lot of fun activities planned. Our entire staff will be available to assist with the program and chaperone the event; allowing you time to relax, unwind and enjoy your evening.

Hey kids, do you love spending time in the kitchen? If so, this 4-H cooking series is just for you! The series begins on April 23. The cost for the workshop is $5, which covers supplies. Students will learn how to plan, purchase, and prepare healthy and tasty meals without spending a lot of money. Youth will have the opportunity to actually prepare and eat a meal during the workshop. Additional series dates include:
• May 23, 1-4pm Topic: Etiquette and Serving Others/Preparing Appetizers $5

Currituck County Center 4-H Electric Field Trip Thu Aug 21 (All Day Event) — 3 weeks away

The Currituck County 4-H program invites any youth interested in electricity and technology to attend the upcoming 4-H Electric Field Trip to be held on August 21. For youth ages 11 and up. Participants will tour the Surry Nuclear Information Center and learn how the nuclear power plant works. They will also be able to enter the learning center. This center includes interactive exhibits on electricity and the different energy sources. Upon completion of the tour, youth will travel to the Chippokes Plantation State Park where they will be able to swim in the olympic size swimming pool. Youth will need to bring their swim suit, towel, and a bag lunch. The fee for this field trip is $10 per person. Space is limited and individuals must pre-register for this field trip. Currituck County Cooperative Extension will sponsor the "Man Up 5K" on Saturday, September 6 at the Currituck Extension Center in Barco. Race sponsors include Towne Bank of Currituck and Albemarle Hospital. Race proceeds will support research being conducted on cancers that are prevalent in men.
