The Currituck Extension Foundation’s 4-H Backpacks for Kids program recently received the Currituck Chamber of Commerce, Nonprofit of the Year Award. The award was presented during the annual Chamber of Commerce and Tourism awards meeting held at the Cooperative Extension Center in Barco. The Nonprofit of the Year Award recognizes a local nonprofit for their outstanding service to the chamber community.

The 4-H Backpacks for Kids program, administered by the Currituck Extension Foundation, provides shelf stable, kid friendly meals to underprivileged children every weekend during the school year. Currently, the program serves 115 elementary aged children throughout Currituck County. The 4-H Backpacks for Kids program is funded through private and corporate donations as well as grants. Funds are utilized to purchase “backpack” meals from the Albemarle Area Food Bank. Volunteers and Sheriff’s deputies distribute meals to the schools each week which are distributed by school personnel to students they identify as having significant need. ellen award
