Aging with Gusto “Senior Prom” Success

— Written By and last updated by

Hurricane Matthew recently left Northeast North Carolina with a bit of the hurricane season blues, but North Carolina Cooperative Extension brightened things up with a day of fun  for the senior population. Northeastern County Extension Agents have been holding this fun filled day of fellowship and education annually for more than 20 years, and it has become known as “Aging with Gusto”. Mistress of Ceremonies Jewel Winslow, serving Perquimans County, hosted this year’s event themed “Aging with Gusto: Senior Prom”. She led a team of extension agents from 7 counties which included Jenny Thompson serving Dare County; Olivia Jones serving Currituck and Camden Counties; Ellen Owens serving Pasquotank County; Mary Morris serving Chowan County; Dee Furlough serving Tyrrell and Dare counties; and Stephanie Parker-Helmkamp serving Hertford County. Of course, what kind of Prom would it be without a King and Queen? So as a highlight of theevent, Mr. Sid Stickle of Chowan County was crowned Prom King and Mrs. Rosa Lee Overton of Pasquotank County was crowned Prom Queen. Attendees were also able to have their prom picture taken, dance under a disco ball, choose from several interesting and educational workshops, and visit with representatives from local community organizations that offer services to seniors. Overall it was a day of fun and laughs to chase away those hurricane season blues. For a peek at the fun we had, check out our “prom album” by visiting which includes the prom pictures taken of attendees as well as other pictures of the entertaining event.
