The Currituck County Horse Bowl team were the champions in the N.C. 4-H State Horse Bowl (Mixed Team) competition that took place on March 7, 2020, in Raleigh NC on the campus of NC State University. The competition consisted of a 12 team, five-round, double-elimination competition, and the Currituck County team took first place while remaining undefeated throughout the day. In the N.C. 4-H Horse Bowl competition, youth use knowledge of horses and related subject matter to compete against other teams, in a competitive and fun atmosphere.

Members of the first place Currituck County team were Sori Suthers, Brooke Decant, Megan Armstrong, Lia Suthers, and Elijah Campbell. Elijah Campbell earned sixth place with the most points for the individual questions answered, with Brooke Decant placing seventh and Sori Suthers placed ninth. The team was coached by 4-H Program Assistant and Currituck County Rural Center Director Tom Harrell and 4-H volunteer Heather Campbell. The event, held in Raleigh on NC State University campus included teams from Currituck, Duplin, Gaston (2), Chatham, Alamance, Perquimans, Burke, Caldwell, New Hanover, Rockingham, and Cabarrus counties.

4-H is North Carolina’s largest youth development organization, equipping more than 263,000 young people each year with the skills to succeed and improve the world around them. 4-H programs and camps encourage young people to “learn by doing,” helping them to develop into active, contributing citizens. NC State Extension and the Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University coordinate 4-H programs statewide.
