Carteret County 4-H’er, Norah Kowalski, is making a difference in her community. Norah, along with her family, volunteers with the non-profit organization, Backpack Friends. While most think of food when they think of Backpack Friends, Norah saw a chance to add something else – hairbrushes. Norah and her sibling set a goal of $650 in 650 hours to donate 650 hairbrushes.

Not only did Norah raise the $650 she set out to raise, she exceeded it by collecting almost $900. That money was then used to purchase hairbrushes and combs for each of the backpacks that were distributed to 18 different locations and schools in Carteret, Craven, Onslow, and Jones counties.

4-H states, “We believe in developing young people who are empowered, confident, hard-working, determined, responsible and compassionate – seeing a world beyond themselves…” Norah exemplifies each of these characteristics and we are proud to call her ours!
