Steve Duckett is NC State University’s new West District Extension Director, effective Nov. 1.

Duckett has 31 years of experience with NC State Extension, including 17 years in a leadership role. He has served as director of Extension’s Buncombe County Center since 2009. He has also worked as Extension’s director in Rutherford County, as agriculture agent in Buncombe County, and as an associate 4-H agent in Macon County.

“Steve’s extensive experience in many facets of Extension and his in-depth knowledge of the opportunities and challenges in the Western region of North Carolina make him an exceptional fit for this important leadership position,” said Susan Kelly, NC State Extension assistant director for county operations.

Duckett will provide leadership for NC State’s Extension directors, agents and specialists in the district that encompasses 21 counties and 22 centers, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He will work with NC State Extension staff and local experts to continue to deliver world-class, research-based programs in the areas of agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, nutrition and health, 4-H youth development, and a variety of other consumer, youth and economic concerns.

“I believe Extension’s mission is as relevant today as it was over a century ago. Our Extension experts are knowledgeable and committed to helping farms, youth, communities and families be successful,” Duckett said. “We have tremendous people, ample opportunities and the resources of a leading land-grant university to help us meet any challenges head on and promote prosperity for Western North Carolina and beyond.”

Duckett holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Berea College in Kentucky, and a master’s in human resource development from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee.

With experts based in all 100 counties and with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, NC State Extension extends research-based knowledge from the university to communities statewide, helping them transform science into everyday solutions. NC State also works with federal, state and local governments, as well as N.C. A&T State University, as part of a strategic partnership called N.C. Cooperative Extension. Together they connect millions of North Carolinians with timely tools and technology that help improve their lives and grow our state. Discover more at go.ncsu.edu/Extension.
