Description:

We invite youth ages 13 to 18 who wish to learn more about gardening to join us on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon in our community garden to learn more about local foods and gardening techniques. Our garden is located at the Cooperative Extension -Currituck Center behind the main building.

Each week we will have hands-on gardening activities where we will have a lot of fun and may even learn something. We grow all sorts of vegetables, and you will help plant, harvest, cultivate and care for our garden throughout the summer.

Themes for each week:

Week 1 - Plant Growth and Development

Week 2 - Soils and Water

Week 3 - Ecology and Environmental Horticulture

Week 4 - Insects and Diseases

Week 5 - Landscape Horticulture

Week 6 - Fruits and Nuts

Week 7 - Vegetables and Herbs

Each session is approximately 3 hours in length and the cost is only $3, so register for some or all of the sessions. No experience is necessary!

We also accept cash and check payments in addition to paying via credit card through Eventbrite. Please, make checks payable to NC State University. Checks and cash payments can be received at the Currituck County office, 120 Community Way Barco NC 27917, within 5 days of registration

As the summer progresses do you find yourself craving more and more local seafood? But are you burnt out on cooking it the same old way? Well NC Cooperative Extension has the solution for you! Join us in person or virtually on June 16, 2021 from 10 am to 12 pm to learn a little about local fish and how to prepare them. We have two class options to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun. Option 1 is an in-person class. This class will be limited to 6 individuals who will have their own kitchen to work in, which will be distanced 6-feet from other individuals. We are asking everyone to wear a mask for the duration of the class with no exceptions. This option has a $15.00 registration fee.

If you are not ready to come back to the Extension office or you do not want to wear a mask you will not be left out! Option 2 for class registration is to join us from the comfort of your home via live stream. This option is free! You will be provided with recipes and a grocery list a week prior to class so you can cook along if you would like. Just log in on June 16th at 10 am for the mouthwatering fun.

Do you get excited when a fish tugs at the end of your line? If so, you are not alone. Fishing is one of the most popular sports in America. Most everyone has a “fishing hole” near their home—whether it’s a creek, pond, lake, or the ocean. Fishing can be as simple as using a cane pole, a line, a cork, and a hook baited with a worm. But you can have more fun and success if you learn as much as possible about the diets and habits of a wide variety of fish.

We are lucky to have several ponds in Maple Park. Join us as we learn fishing basics and then try our luck in the local waters around NC Cooperative Extension - Currituck Center. This program is for youth ages 8 to 13. We will meet at NC Cooperative Extension - Currituck Center at 120 Community Way in Barco, NC. From there, we will fish the local ponds. The pick up will be at the same location at 12:00 noon.

We will provide equipment and bait, or bring your own if you would like. We have two dates for this program. You can attend one or both. The dates and times are:

Thursday, June 17th, 9 am to 12 noon

Thursday, July 1st, 9 am to 12 noon EXTRA SESSION

Thursday, July 22nd, 9 am to 12 noon
