Description:

The Chatham County Center – North Carolina Cooperative Extension will be offering a program entitled “Eat Smart/Move More – Take Control” from 6:00pm – 7:30pm on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 65 East Chatham Street, Pittsboro. “Take Control” is a six-week, chronic disease prevention and management program that provides strategies to help adults manage their health. It uses the theory of planned behavior to inform, empower, and motivate participants with strategies and skills to change their eating and physical activity patterns. These strategies are consistent with the 2015 Dietary Guidelines recommendation to prevent chronic disease. The program provides opportunities for participants to track their goals and progress toward healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. Each lesson comes with a handout that summarizes the primary goals from that lesson along with a featured recipe.

Classes will be held in the Food Lab of the Chatham County Cooperative Extension building. The program is FREE due to being grant supported, but registration is required. Description: Setting Eggs at Shawboro Elementary, Griggs Elementary School, Jarvisburg Elementary and WAVES in Corolla.
Embryology School Enrichment program is a tool for teachers to help them teach their lesson on the life cycle. Each second grade classroom receives an incubator, chicken eggs, and other equipment to hatch eggs in the classroom. Students get hands-on learning as they each have a hand in turning the eggs and caring for the chicks once they are hatched.

2024 Albemarle Area Livestock Show and Sale Wed Apr 24

Description:

Currituck County 4-H offers an array of animal science projects; everything from poultry, to horse, to livestock. These projects offer youth the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in animal care, health, and nutrition. More importantly, youth learn compassion and responsibility for living things, perseverance, decision making, initiative, detail, organization, effective communications and record keeping.

Our livestock program starts in December and finishes at the end of April with the Albemarle Livestock Show and Sale. This program is for youth ages 5 (and in kindergarten) to 18 and enrolled but not having graduated from high school. The species available for Currituck youth to show are Steer, Heifer, Lamb, Goat, and Hog. These animals are market animals that youth purchase from a farmer/breeder. They will train these animals to walk, stand, and be judged. The dates of the Albemarle Area 4-H Livestock Show and Sale will be April 23rd and 24th, 2024. Show times will be Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning and the auction will be held on Wednesday evening. All animals except for heifers will participate in the auction.

There are some key dates and deadlines that have to be met:.

Register with our office by November 21st, if you want the Currituck County staff to help you find your animal. To do that please call Stephanie Minton at 252-232-2262.
If you plan on showing steer, you will need to have these animals in your possession by December 31st. (tagged by January 10th)
Every participant must complete an online registration form and must complete the 4-H online registration by February 28th.
If you are showing a lamb, goat, or hog, you will need to have these animals in your possession by March 1st. (tagged by March 15th).
A registration fee of $20 (payable to Albemarle Area 4-H Livestock Show) is required to be paid by January 31, 2024 for all youth planning to show a Heifer. Heifers must be born between April 30, 2022 to October 31,2023.

There are opportunities outside of the Albemarle Area 4-H Show that will help you increase your knowledge of showing and training your animal. Currituck County 4-H will also host livestock workshops to help youth prepare for the spring. Dates and times will be announced at a later date.

The 4-H Electric Program is a great way for youth to learn about the fundamentals of electricity, renewable energy technologies, and energy conservation. Youth that participate in the 4-H Electric program and attend hands-on workshops, not only increase their knowledge and skills in the world of science and technology, but are also inclined to seek out other activities and experiences that expand their horizons.

Currituck County 4-H is hosting a series of workshops starting April 3, 2024 for youth ages 11 to 18. Each of these workshops will provide youth the opportunity to explore a variety of energy concepts including building circuits and creating working switches as well as participating in solar, wave, wind energy and electric experiments. Participants will also learn about careers in the energy industry and much, much more.

Youth that participate in these workshops will also learn about NC 4-H Electric Congress and how to earn the opportunity to attend this exciting, all expenses paid event sponsored by NC Cooperative Extension, Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, and the NC Association of Electric Cooperatives. Participation in these workshops will provide youth with the experiences, knowledge and skills to complete and submit an electric project record, thus earning an opportunity to be considered for participation in NC 4-H Electric Congress in July 2024.

Classes being offered in this series are:

April 3, 2024 , 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m: Dominion Power Lineman’s Demonstration: There are many different jobs and roles required to keep our electrical infrastructure up and running and Linemen play a crucial role in keeping communities powered and safe particularly during emergencies and natural disasters. Join the 4-H staff for this informative demonstration of the equipment and skills required to keep our everyday world powered. Youth will also participate in hands-on electric and energy activities during this workshop.

May 24, 2024, 2:00 p.m. -4:30 p.m.: Circuits and More: Energy is created and transferred in many different ways in today’s technologically advanced world, however no matter the form of energy or the method of use the basic circuit connection is at it’s core. Participants will explore multiple methods of energy generation and the many different uses and types of circuits and have the opportunity to design and build multiple types of circuits

June 11, 2024, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Coastal Studies Institute: Ocean Rovers and Wave Generated Energy. Learn basic oceanography and principles of electricity and then construct a model wave energy convertor. Youth will also learn about how scientists collect data from harsh salty environments using advanced technology, and then construct their version of a data collecting remotely operated vehicle.

The Lineman's Demonstration (April 3) and Circuits and More (May 24) will take place at NC Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center at 120 Community Way in Barco, NC. and there is no charge for these workshops

The Ocean Rovers/Wave Energy workshop will depart Currituck County Center and travel to the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese NC for these two activities and there is an $8.00 fee.

Confident public speaking is a crucial, but often overlooked and underdeveloped skill. Developing effective communication skills and techniques provide youth with a positive sense of self and higher levels of self-confidence. This empowers them to achieve and succeed in any situation they encounter. More information on the benefits and importance of developing effective public speaking skills in youth can be found in this article.

Good public speakers are made – not born. Check out our homegrown champion: 4-H National Public Speaking Champion.

The Currituck County 4-H Public Speaking program allows youth to develop and practice these essential skills in a positive and fun learning environment under the guidance of caring volunteers and Extension staff. In this program, youth ages 8-18 research, write, practice, and deliver a 5-12 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. Youth ages 5-7 can also participate by presenting a two to four-minute presentation on the subject of their choice.

All participants may compete in our County Activity Day June 14, 2024 and District 4-H Activity Day June 21, 2024 competitions. Gold and Silver medalists at District Activity Day will qualify for the NC 4-H State Public Speaking competition held on the campus of NC State University in Raleigh, NC on July 23, 2024.

In order to help youth draft and prepare their Presentations we have scheduled several program activities:

Presentations Overview and Q&A: April 2, 2024: Presentations Overview 2024

This session presents a general overview of the program and how youth can get involved. We will also outline the presentation categories and program areas and a question and answer session. Join us Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 6pm for this activity. If you are unable to attend please contact the 4-H Agent and we will coordinate a date and time to meet with you regarding this program.

Outdoor Cooking Presentations April 4, 2024: Outdoor Cooking Workshop

These presentation categories are a great way to ease into the presentation program and learn how to give a hands on grilling demonstration presentation. There are 5 categories: Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Pork and Seafood, three age groups: 8-10, 11-13 & 14-18 and a whole lot of food and fun. Join us April 4, 2024 from 9am-1pm and learn all the tips and tricks to delivering a great 4-H Outdoor Cooking Presentation.

Foods Presentations April 5, 2024: Foods & Nutrition Presentations

There are several foods and nutrition categories that provide youth with the opportunity to highlight the use of specific foods in healthy and nutritious dishes during their demonstration presentation. Foods and Nutrition categories include Dairy, Peanut, Egg Cookery, Fruits and Vegetables and a general Foods Category for foods not included in the previously mentioned categories. A very tasty and fun way to learn how to conduct a demonstration presentation. Join us April 5, 2024 from 9am-1pm for hand ons activities, fun food facts and presentation tips and techniques.

Presentation Prep & Practice: Wednesday and Friday afternoons from April 8, 2024 until June 15 2024. We have also scheduled a series of workshops and work sessions for Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 3:30-6pm, from April 8, 2024 until June 15, 2024. These sessions will provide youth with assistance, tips and techniques, formatting, preparation, poise (appearance and body language) and practice in a safe and friendly environment. Call the 4-H staff 252-232-2262 to register for the day and time and we will add you to the schedule.

If these days and times are not convenient for your family please call and we will coordinate a day and time that will work best for you.
