Description:

The Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Currituck County is currently accepting applications for 2018. This year’s class will be offered in the evenings to accommodate gardening enthusiasts who are otherwise obligated during the day. Classes start on September 25 and run for 13 weeks, ending on December 20. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center located at 120 Community Way in Barco. The fee for this program is $95 and no prior gardening experience is necessary.

Participants will learn about horticulture topics including botany, soils, fertilizers, houseplants, lawns, plant insects and diseases, weeds, pesticides, vegetables, fruits, landscape design, plant materials, wildlife, and volunteering. Classes are designed to prepare Master Gardener℠ volunteers for service as volunteers and resident plant experts with NC State Extension.

Pre-registration by Sept. 10 is required. You can register online or contact the office at 252-232-2261 to obtain an application. Payment must be received within 5 business days of registering and can be made in person at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center or by mailing a check made payable to “Currituck County” to 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 27917.

Description:

4-H Robotics Club for youth ages 8-18. Working together in small groups, youth learn what a robot is, how to build one using a Lego Mindstorms robotics kit, and how to program the robots to interact with its environment. In a horse bowl competition, a series of questions are asked to teams of four players. The first team to “buzz-in” with the correct answer receives a point and the team with the most points wins the round. Teams participate in local educational workshops to prepare and compete against teams from across the Northeast region of North Carolina. Teams that perform well enough on the district level, go on to compete for the state title.

Horse Bowl is an enjoyable educational experiences and offer an opportunity for youths, interested in horses, to study and obtain a more thorough knowledge of horses and related subject matter. Staff and volunteers of NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck County work with youth to prepare for these educational contests.

Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) training is a 30-hour training course that provides volunteers with the education and opportunity to support their local community and Extension Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) agents with food-related programming. Description: Extension Master Food Volunteers Monthly Meeting
Extension Master Food Volunteers work to extend the reach of the Family and Consumer Sciences programming by assisting and leading the programs, demonstrations, and workshops related to food, food safety, and nutrition. Volunteers received 30 hours of training and 20 hours of shadowing to become certified as an Extension Master Food Volunteer.
