While 2021 was another year of challenges, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center rose to the occasion and delivered strong results for the citizens of Currituck County and beyond. Below is just a brief overview of some of the highlights of the outstanding work of this team. 

In 2021, Currituck Extension staff made nearly 13,000 direct (face to face) contacts with citizens and over 1.5 million digital media and mass media contacts. Staff provided 993 hours of educational content through 340 different activities which reached an audience of over 8200. Program volunteers extended that reach by over 4600 contacts during the 5300 hours that they donated at a value of $138,266. Staff, volunteers and partners raised over $67,000 to support local programs through grants, donations, and fees.

• The 4-H Summer Fun program reached 114 different youth, 38 of whom were new to the 4-H program
• Currituck 4-H produced youth public speaking champions at the local, district, state, and national levels
• Currituck Extension launched a partnership with the Senior Nutrition Site to provide fresh vegetables to senior adults from the newly improved Extension community garden
• The reinvigorated Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program made improvements to the greenhouse and demonstration sites
• The Family and Consumer Sciences program assisted over 235 Medicare beneficiaries in enrolling in a drug plan and saved clients a combined $72,000
• Family and Consumer Sciences staff delivered a variety of virtual programs and recorded positive impacts from participants in the areas of reducing food waste, food safety and nutrition and increasing physical activity
• Agriculture staff provided education for 307 individuals to receive credits toward keeping their pesticide applicator licenses current and recertified 24 private pesticide applicators
• The Currituck Farm Festival Agricultural Appreciation event was launched with over 500 in attendance
• Currituck joined the VisitNC Farms app and began enrolling farms and agribusinesses to increase marketing and sales of local foods and agriculture opportunities
• The 4-H Backpacks for Kids weekend feeding program continued to deliver weekend meals to students in need at all of Currituck’s elementary schools
