The 4-H Horse Bowl is an educational competition that challenges youth to test their knowledge of horses, horsemanship, and the equine industry in a fast-paced, team-based competition. Participants work together to answer questions, demonstrate what they have learned, and build confidence while competing with other 4-H members who share their interest in horses.
Horse Bowl combines learning, teamwork, and friendly competition. Youth study a broad range of horse-related topics and then compete in a quiz-bowl format. Teams must listen carefully, think quickly, and work together to select the correct answers.
What Do Participants Learn?
Horse Bowl questions may cover many areas of equine science and horse management, including:
- Horse breeds and identification – recognizing breeds, colors, markings, and characteristics
- Horse anatomy and physiology – parts of the horse, skeletal and muscular systems, and how the horse's body functions
- Horse health and diseases – common health concerns, disease prevention, vaccinations, parasites, and basic first aid
- Nutrition and feeding – feed types, nutrients, feeding practices, supplements, and safe feeding management
- Grooming and daily care – proper grooming techniques, hoof care, equipment, and routine health checks
- Horsemanship and riding – riding principles, horse behavior, training, and safe handling
- Tack and equipment – identifying saddles, bridles, bits, grooming tools, and other equipment and understanding their proper use
- Stable and pasture management – safe facilities, fencing, pasture care, manure management, and environmental considerations
- Equine reproduction – basic reproductive anatomy, breeding, pregnancy, foaling, and care of mares and foals
- Horse industry and careers – careers, organizations, competitions, and the role of horses in agriculture and recreation
- Horse safety and welfare – responsible horse ownership, humane treatment, biosecurity, and safe practices around horses
- Equine science – genetics, digestion, behavior, movement, and other scientific principles related to horses
More Than a Competition
While Horse Bowl is a contest, its benefits extend well beyond answering questions. Preparing for the competition encourages youth to study, research, communicate, make decisions, and work as a team. Participants develop skills in listening, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork—skills that can be applied in school, careers, and everyday life.
The 4-H Horse Bowl program also provides youth with an opportunity to expand their horse knowledge beyond riding. Whether they own a horse, participate in other 4-H horse programs, or simply have an interest in the equine industry, Horse Bowl gives young people a way to turn their interest in horses into a deeper understanding of equine science and management.
Currituck County 4-H will offer a series of educational workshops to help all interested youth build their horse knowledge and prepare for the District Horse Bowl competition to be held in February 2027. These practice sessions will provide hands-on learning, review important equine topics, and give participants opportunities to practice answering questions in a team setting.

NOVEMBER 12TH 5PM -7PM
DECEMBER 3rd and 17TH 5PM -7PM
January 7th and 21st 5pm -7pm
