Users of commercial pesticides, adjuvants, surfactants or fertilizers have the option of free disposal for empty plastic containers 55 gallons or smaller. When properly cleaned, these empty containers will be recycled into agricultural drainage pipes, road pavement or other uses. N.C. Cooperative Extension partnered with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and Nutrien to establish a storage facility at 8452 Main Street, Vanceboro, NC. The containers are chipped free of charge by USAg Recycling. In addition to energy savings by reuse of the empty containers, this effort extends landfill space by diverting these containers from the landfill as well as reduces chance of accidental pesticide exposure to those handling the containers.

The program is funded by the NC Pesticide Environmental Trust Fund and supplemented by Nutrien and the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Craven County as management. Properly pressure rinsed or triple rinsed containers can be delivered free of charge Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. except for holidays. Please visit the Nutrien office to obtain a key since the facility will remained locked at all times when not in use.

To ensure acceptance of empty containers,

  • Only rigid high-density polyethylene (HDPE), 55 gallons or smaller are accepted
  • Any part of the container such as metal handles, rubber linings, caps, or other non-HDPE material must be removed and disposed of in the landfill
  • All containers must be triple-rinsed or pressure rinsed to remove pesticide residues
  • No rinsate or pesticide materials should remain in the container

Additional resources such as training materials in English and Spanish are available from the Ag Container Recycling Council’s website. Two examples that outline the process and a checklist for proper acceptance are provided below. However, video and other materials are available. For further assistance contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Craven County office at 252-633-1477.
