The world in which our youth are growing up is full of challenges and obstacles. According to the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, each day in the U.S. approximately 3,600 young people between the ages of 12-17 initiate cigarette smoking. An estimated 1,100 young people become daily cigarette smokers. The survey also found that almost 75% of young people in the U.S. had at least one drink of alcohol on at least 1 day in their lifetime.

The Health Rocks!® is a three-part series evidence and research based leader’s curricula for a healthy living program, with the goal of bringing youth, families and communities across the United States together to reduce tobacco, alcohol and drug use by youth. Health Rocks! helps youth develop life skills in the area of critical thinking, decision-making, communication, managing feelings, stress management and goal setting to help them resist risky behaviors. It also provides accurate health information regarding statistics and consequences of youth tobacco, alcohol, and drug usage. Teaching tips and key health messages are embedded within the activities. Health Rocks! aligns with National Health Standards and NC Essential Standards Healthful Living-Health Education targeting ages 10-14.

Health Rocks! is a healthy living program designed to:

  • Help youth build life skills which lead to healthy lifestyle choices
  • Reduce youth smoking and tobacco use
  • Help youth understand influences and health consequences of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use to make healthy choices
  • Engage youth and adults in partnership to develop and implement community strategies that promote healthy lifestyle choices

The 46 activities use hands-on experiences to facilitate youth learning, including concept review and learning assessment at the end of each chapter. A Retrospective Impact Evaluation is included along with appendices with additional resources, drugs glossary, and a facilitator-training outline.

North Carolina Health Rocks is grant funded by National 4-H. Agents who participate in the Professional development training will work with the state office to evaluate the program.
