Discover 4-H Club is an engaging youth program designed to introduce members to the wide range of opportunities available through 4-H. This hands-on, interactive club explores a variety of topics throughout the year—including science, agriculture, arts, leadership, and more—giving youth the chance to discover their interests while building valuable life skills. Open to ages 5–7 and 8–12, the club offers a supportive and fun environment where creativity, knowledge, and skill development thrive. Whether members are brand-new to 4-H or returning with experience, the Discover 4-H Club provides ongoing opportunities for learning and personal growth, all rooted in the 4-H motto of Learning by Doing.” Join us each month as our club dives into a new and exciting theme!

September 4th:  Journey through Space

Unleash your child’s inner artist and scientist with our Discover 4-H program designated to learning about space, our solar system and the different phases of the moon. October 2nd: 4-H Animal Exploration 

Calling all young animal lovers! Step into the incredible world of creatures big, small, furry, and scaly with our 4-H Animal Explorers Program. From discovering the untamed spirit of wild horses and learning how to care for gentle rabbits to getting up close with fascinating reptiles like lizards, kids will explore the amazing diversity of the animal kingdom. Participants will get an up close look at what it takes to keep our animals fed, and well cared for, as each animal has its own specific needs. November 6th: NC Ag: Sweet Potato 

Dig into North Carolina's favorite crop with our NC Ag: Sweet Potato program! As the nation’s top sweet potato state, we’re serving up a fun, hands-on culinary adventure where young chefs will learn how to turn this superfood into delicious meals. Kids will explore versatile cooking techniques—from roasting and mashing to baking sweet potato fries and mixing up healthy treats—all while mastering kitchen safety, and basic knife skills. It’s an engaging, tasty way to build confidence in the kitchen while celebrating our local agricultural roots.

December 18th: Pressing Sausage workshop

Roll up your sleeves and experience the complete farm-to-table process in our 4-H Sausage Making Workshop! Young culinary enthusiasts will take full hands-on control as they learn the entire craft step by step—from selecting quality cuts and custom-blending savory seasonings to operating a sausage press that will press the meat into fresh sausage links. Guided by safety and culinary basics, participants will discover the science behind meat processing, master specialized kitchen tools, and take pride in crafting delicious, professional-quality sausage links entirely from scratch. All programs will be held at the NC Cooperative Extension office located at 120 Community Way, Barco NC starting at 5:30 pm and ending at 7:30 pm. These programs are free, but space is limited.  Please note that there are two age groups for each workshop (5-7 and 8-10) - make sure to select the correct section when completing the registration form.
