Selling cocoa for fifty cents may not sound like a great way to make money, but Skylar Hill of Moyock and a few of her friends did just that to raise funds for the Currituck 4-H Backpacks for Kids Weekend Feeding Program. Skylar, with the help of her mom and friends, created a flier, spread the word through social media, and set up their stand in front of their home in Moyock. These youth enthusiastically sold cocoa, coffee, treats, and accepted donations all weekend long. Their hard work paid off in the form of $1500 in sales and donations for the Currituck 4-H Backpacks for Kids Program.
The Currituck 4-H Backpacks For Kids Program provides meals for students who are identified by school staff as being food insecure. Each week, children receive enough food for six shelf stable, kid friendly meals delivered to schools by the Currituck Sheriff’s deputies. Weekends are a vulnerable time for food insecure youth as they don’t benefit from meals provided through the school system. This program helps to bridge that gap and is currently serving 110 students throughout Currituck County. The program is supported 100% through community donations, corporate donations, and grant funds.
Skylar and her friends are not the only all stars that sustain this effort. Beautifully Broken by Lisa recently donated $1000 from sales to the program and Lisa Kreisel set up a fundraiser through her home-based business to benefit the initiative. Currituck Kids recently offered a grant of $1000 in support of the program. And TowneBank, through Currituck Travel and Tourism donated $3500 in proceeds from a recent fundraiser toward program assistance.
How can you get involved? Monetary donations are the biggest need and any amount helps. The approximate cost to feed one child monthly is twenty dollars. Donations can also be received at the Currituck Extension Center located at 120 Community Way in Barco. Checks should be made payable to the Currituck Extension Foundation.
