Currituck County 4-H is proud to launch a six-part series highlighting the outstanding accomplishments of our 4-H youth over the past four months. This series will showcase the dedication, leadership, and growth demonstrated by our 4-H’ers through a variety of programs, competitions, and community service efforts. From public speaking to target sports, and from citizenship to hands-on learning and sustained academic success Currituck County 4-H youth continue to make a meaningful impact both locally and beyond. Join us as we celebrate their hard work, share their stories, and shine a spotlight on the next generation of leaders.
In the spotlight this week are Currituck County’s “Kids in the Kitchen” teams. Two of these teams earned a spot in the 2025 Dinah Gore 4-H Healthy Food Challenge which was held on May 17th in partnership with the annual Got to Be NC Festival at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC. This contest challenged teams to prepare a meal given a ‘secret ingredient,’ food category, and items from a locally sourced pantry. With just forty minutes to work, participants had to conceive and prepare their dishes, clean and repack their workstations, and draft and deliver a 5-7 minute presentation on the recipe, highlighting cooking methods, food & kitchen safety, and the nutritional values of their dish.
Competition was fierce, but both teams did an excellent job of applying all the knowledge and cooking skills they learned in multiple practice sessions leading up to the competition. Time management and teamwork were critical components of the competition and the “Kids in the Kitchen” teams used both extremely well on their way to a successful finish!
Spinach (8–10 year olds) and Ground Lamb (14-18 year olds) were the secret ingredients that participants learned about only moments after the forty-minute countdown began. To accompany these ingredients, participants selected from a variety of local NC fruits, vegetables, spices, sauces, eggs, and much more.
- The “Currituck Slicers” in the 8-10 year-old division composed of Alex Podgorsky, Peaches Wright, Lena Ehbrecht, and Aubrey McCutchan produced the winning
Gold Medal dish with their version of a healthy Breakfast Street Taco. - The “Currituck Culinary Cartel” consisting of Joey Shawgo, Camilla McCutchan, Cian Folsom and Kaylee Ehbrecht competed in the very competitive senior (14-18) division, plating an exceptional Lamb and Orzo dish, earning a second place finish and a Silver Medal.
Congratulations to all these outstanding young 4-H’ers. They did an awesome job — from coming up with creative dishes using surprise ingredients to giving impressive presentations about nutrition, cooking skills, and kitchen safety. Their hard work, teamwork, and confidence really stood out.
