Currituck County has 3 Extension and Community Association (ECA) Clubs that meet throughout the county, Corolla, Moyock and Circle ECA. These clubs do service projects and participate in educational or leadership development activities within their communities. The County Council is made up of representatives from each club and works to assist with community service projects and educational workshops initiated by the individual ECA clubs. If you are interested in participating in community service projects, helping your community and meeting like-minded people, joining an ECA club might be the right thing for you! Confident public speaking is a crucial, but often overlooked and underdeveloped skill. Developing effective communication skills and techniques provide youth with a positive sense of self and higher levels of self-confidence. This empowers them to achieve and succeed in any situation they encounter. More information on the benefits and importance of developing effective public speaking skills in youth can be found in this article.

Good public speakers are made – not born. Check out our homegrown, right here in Currituck, 4-H National Public Speaking Champion.

The Currituck County 4-H Public Speaking program allows youth to develop and practice these essential skills in a positive and fun learning environment under the guidance of caring volunteers and Extension staff. In this program, youth ages 8-18 research, write, practice, and deliver a 5-12 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. Youth ages 5-7 can also participate by presenting a two to four-minute presentation on the subject of their choice. All participants may compete in our District 4-H Activity Day Competition on June 15, 2023 and qualify for the NC 4-H State Public Speaking competition held on the campus of NC State University in Raleigh, NC on July 22, 2023.

Currituck County 4-H staff will host a “Presentations Ice Cream Social” on April 4, 2023 for all families interested in participating in the 2023 presentations/public speaking program. We will provide information about the program, go over the process and rules, provide a calendar of presentation program workshops and practice sessions, and provide a detailed walkthrough of the presentations categories and age groups. There are no fees for this event however pre-registration is required by visiting: Ice Cream Social Registration

We have also scheduled a series of workshops each Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-6pm, from May 3, 2023 until June 15, 2023. Practice sessions will provide youth with assistance, tips and techniques, formatting, preparation, poise (appearance and body language) and practice in a safe and friendly environment. If your child would like to participate in the public speaking program but cannot attend the Wednesday workshops-call the 4-H staff and we will work with you to find practice time. Yoga combines breath and movement so you can really understand the capabilities of your body. Which makes yoga great for anyone no matter their fitness level. This club provides youth ages 8-18 the opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM learning while designing and building robots, integrating new technologies like 3D printing, electrical and computer circuits, and computer programming into their projects. Description:

Do you need a day out where you can enjoy learning new things while having fun? We have the perfect class for you! N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center is partnering with the Villas at Waterside this spring to offer Waterside Workshops with Extension. Classes will be held at the Clubhouse, and the class fee of $20.00 which will cover class materials and giveaways. If you want to purchase two tickets, call the Currituck Extension Office at 252-232-2261 for a discounted second ticket. The discounted ticket will not receive any promotional items purchased for the class, but will still include the meal.

April 13th - Herbs

In our herbs class, we’ll learn to make delicious mocktails while creating mason jar container herb gardens. After we create our gardens, we’ll learn a few recipes to use our fresh herbs that we’ll sample for lunch! Class will start at 10:00 and will finish with lunch at Noon.

May 23rd - Grilling

Join us for our grilling class from 5:30 - 7:30, and enjoy an evening at the clubhouse learning to grill a few of our favorite recipes while watching a Currituck Summer Sunset! By the end of our class, we’ll have you ready to impress your friends with your grilling skills on Memorial Day.

June 13th - Seafood

Our last class will start at 10am when we will dive into one of our largest local foods. In our seafood class we will cover what’s in season, seafood selection, and where you can purchase local seafood. Of course we will teach you how to create some delicious recipes featuring these local foods.

Checks and cash payments can be received at the Currituck Extension Office located at 120 Community Way Barco, NC 27917, within 5 days of registration.
